I received great news this week...I was just picked up full time by a fire department! We will call it BFD. A full-time position, complete with a pension, job security, room for advancement. I had my final interview last week, and I thought it went horrible. The last question was "What do you think is your biggest challenge in the fire service?" I paused, thought about it, and decided to be honest. I told them I think my biggest challenge is the fact I am female. Then, I asked them to please let me explain before they roll their eyes at me.
I went on to tell them that as a woman, I believe I am at a disadvantage coming into the fire service. I believe, even though it might by subconsciously, my male counterparts find me weak and unable to do the job. I have to prove myself twice as hard as any man when I begin a new job. But, I told the chief, I earn the respect of my peers in a short amount of time, without any problems.
I guess it wasn't a bad answer, since I beat out a good number of people!

If you could deal with some of the situations in your last post, any man that would look at you as not tough enough would be an idiot!!!
Congrats! I know the testing for full time departments is insane and you have to be good at what you do to get on. Be proud, you earned it!
